POSITION Information:

Lead Coach - Ski Team

Job Summary

The Ski Lead Coach is responsible for providing year-round first-class programming to the athlete members of JFST. This role involves technical coaching, team management, administrative duties, and overseeing other coaching staff. The goal is to foster a love for freestyle skiing, and help athletes achieve their athletic goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Coaching

  • Develop and implement yearly training plans for athletes of all levels.

  • Stay updated on Alberta Freestyle Ski Team skill development expectations.

  • Evaluate athletes’ performances and provide constructive feedback.

  • Always ensure athlete safety

  • Conduct individual goal-setting meetings with Development Team athletes

  • Assign competitions appropriate to each athlete's skill level.

  • Coordinate and participate in dryland training activities.

  • Qualify all inverts safely and submit required air qualifications

Team Management and Administrative Duties

  • Plan and manage all JFST Ski programs.

  • Serve as a role model to other coaches, athletes and their families.

  • Attend team functions

  • Manage the Emergency Action Plan for all programs

  • Plan and execute team bonding activities.

  • Develop and submit budget for seasonal schedules outlining camps and competitions to the Board.

  • Coordinate athlete attendance at camps and competitions.

  • Assign athletes to appropriate training groups.

  • Manage and maintain coaching equipment (e.g., radios, video cameras, laptops, shovels).

  • Address athlete and parent concerns and escalate significant issues to the Board.

  • Assist in managing fitness programs and athlete testing.

  • Submit an annual report.

  • Assist in designing and constructing training facilities at Marmot Basin

  • Manage the airbag operations

  • Approve training facilities before use.

  • Recruit athletes

Managing Other Coaches

  • Determine the required number of coaches and their qualifications and provide hiring recommendations to the JFST Board.

  • Recruit and hire coaches once the Board has approved staffing levels and compensation.

  • Create efficient and cost-effective coaching schedules and monitor attendance.

  • Develop coach professional development plan

  • Delegate coaching duties and oversee performance.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Extensive experience in freestyle skiing coaching and athlete development.

  • Strong knowledge of technical skiing skills, safety protocols, and competitive requirements.

  • Effective leadership and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage teams and coordinate events efficiently.

  • Strong organizational, communication and administrative capabilities.

  • Freestyle Ski Certification

    • Fundamentals with all NCCP requirements

    • Skiing modules and Moguls modules would be an asset

    • Park and pipe module would be an asset

    • Air 1-2-3-4 would be an asset

    • Comp Dev Moguls would be an asset

  • Others

    • First Aid

    • Avalanche Safety Training (AST) would be an asset

Working Conditions

  • Outdoor coaching in various weather conditions.

  • Travel required for competitions and training camps.

  • Seasonal fluctuations in workload, with peak activity during the winter season.

Compensation

The successful candidate will receive a remuneration based on certification, skills and experience as per our salary scale matrix.

POSITION Information:

fundamentals Coach - Snowboard Team

Job Summary

The Snowboard Fundamentals Coach is responsible for delivering safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate snowboard programming for entry-level athletes. The coach fosters a positive and inclusive learning environment while developing fundamental snowboard skills, confidence, and a passion for the sport. Working collaboratively with the Head Coach and coaching team, the Fundamentals Coach implements club programming, promotes safe sport principles, monitors athlete progress, and supports the club's long-term athlete development pathway.

Required Qualifications

  • Passion for coaching and developing foundational snowboard skills in athletes.

  • Intermediate to advanced snowboard riding ability demonstrating strong fundamental skills, including balanced stance, edge control, speed management, and linked turns on beginner and intermediate terrain.

  • Ability to create a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to provide clear demonstrations and constructive feedback.

  • Ability to work effectively with children and youth in both individual and group settings.

  • Reliable, professional, and committed to athlete development.

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check, as required to be properly certified to coach.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fundamental or entry-level snowboard coaching certification (Canada Snowboard or equivalent), or willingness to obtain to start the position

  • Previous coaching, teaching, mentoring, or leadership experience with children or youth.

  • Experience participating in organized snowboard programs or competitive snowboarding.

  • Knowledge of Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) principles and safe sport practices.

  • Experience planning and delivering age-appropriate training sessions.

Core Competencies

  • Demonstrates sound snowboard fundamentals and effective riding technique.

  • Builds positive relationships with athletes, parents, volunteers, and fellow coaches.

  • Delivers engaging, progressive training sessions focused on skill development and athlete confidence.

  • Prioritizes athlete safety, risk management, and responsible decision-making.

  • Provides encouragement and individualized feedback to support athlete progression.

  • Models professionalism, sportsmanship, and respect both on and off the snow.

  • Works collaboratively within the coaching team and is committed to ongoing coach education and development.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to snowboard for extended periods in varying winter weather conditions.

  • Ability to repeatedly demonstrate snowboard skills throughout training sessions.

  • Ability to assist athletes with equipment and transport training materials as required.
